A school in Barcarena, on the outskirts of Belém, Brazil, has been putting into practice one of the central themes of COP30: adapting to a world increasingly shaped by dangerous climate events. In the Amazon, between floods and droughts, the effects of climate change on education are subtle but disruptive. Yet over the past three years, the Maria Naura Gouvêa Municipal School has led the way in inspiring climate adaptation.
During COP30, Kamal Kishore, Head of the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), joined a field visit to the school to witness Barcarena’s resilience first-hand. He described the school as a guiding light, capable of inspiring adaptation efforts far beyond the Amazon.
“If we come together and systematically begin to address risk, and invest in locally led disaster risk reduction and locally led climate change adaptation, we can create a situation in which communities across the world are better prepared to deal with the emerging impacts of climate change.”
